Justice

Richard Justice feels the spirit of Spring Training. Deducing that the Astros are in first place at the moment, he writes the traditional "you never know" article about the Astros chances this season.

Justice does not fall into the trap of asking the local team to hire older players he has heard of before, and commends GM Tim Purpura for sticking with youngsters (may he continue to push this on Purpura when Palmiero, Vizcaino, and Ausmus come up for new contracts).

And for most people, youth is the great unknown in baseball. Justice falls into this trap, stating that "Lane and Burke might both be impact players offensively" and that "Taveras has blazing speed."

But a great advantage of Sabrmetrics is that it has reduced the uncertainty of youth, by demonstrating that a player's performance in the major leagues can be anticipated by his performance in the minor leagues.

Over the next few days, I'll look at the young players Justice identified, examining their track record and what Astro fans might be able to expect this season from them.

A Rays-esque Trade by a former Rays Front Office Guy

James Click is a product of the Rays front office. It showed on Thursday.  Click made a surprising move right before the trade deadline sending starting CF Myles Straw to the Indians for reliever Phil Maton and minor league catcher Yanier Diaz.  The Rays are well known for trying to trade players at the peak of their value from the surplus areas of their team. The Rays did this again yesterday when the traded their closer Diego Castillo to the Mariners for another reliever and a prospect at 3B. Few expected Castillo to be traded, but having received excellent performances from a number of relievers, the Rays dealt from their surplus to gain a prospect.  Click did something similar here, seeing a surplus (even if a small one) in his stable of center fielders. The Astros will now make Chas McCormick their regular center fielder, and have called up Jake Myers from Sugarland to serve as the team's fourth outfielder.  McCormick has been a revelation this year as a fourth ...

Is Jake Meyers for Real?

What's the greatest honor a player can win?  For Jose Altuve, it was the American League MVP Award. For Zack Greinke, it was the Cy Young Award.  And earlier today for Jake Meyers, it was the YouTube MVP award, given to the player of the game as voted on by fans watching the broadcast on YouTube. Meyers went 2 for 5, but his hard hit ball off of Royals reliever Joel Payamps brought home Alex Bregman for the walk-off 10th inning win.  Jake Meyers and His YouTube MVP Award. Meyers's good game today was not a fluke. He his now slashing .316/.344/.526 in 61 plate appearances since being called up from Sugar Land on August 1.  The Astros traded Myles Straw for Phil Maton because James Click thought that the combination of Chas McCormick and Meyers would produce as well as the combination of Straw and McCormick. So far, that component of the trade has worked as planned. Meyers has hit well, and McCormick has slashed  .333/.379/.467 in 66 plate appearances th...
